Instagram Update: No Longer a Photo Sharing App?

Have you heard the news?

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has described some of the recent changes to the app. A BIG change includes the move away from photo sharing in favour of video content.

But why?

Upon seeing the recent successes of TikTok and YouTube, and in an attempt to adapt with user preferences, they are looking to match these competitive entertainment platforms by experimenting with video.

Moving forward, Instagram is going to primarily focus on four key areas: Creators, Video, Shopping and Messaging. Mosseri’s message is clear. They do not want Instagram to be the “square photo-sharing app” that we all know and love. But we shouldn’t be hesitant of these changes just yet!

What does this mean for you?

We don’t know for certain how these changes are going to impact the app. But if you’re not an avid video fan there’s no need to panic! These new features may well integrate into the app the same way that stories, reels and IGTV did. Don’t we all love using those now? Another feature will be the full-screen video experience, in order to embrace video content to the greatest extent, creating a more immersive experience for the user. It’s not fair to jump to negative conclusions straight away, although understandable to be wary.

One of the appeals of social media is the vast opportunities available across a variety of different platforms. Is this update going to make this easier or hinder the experience?

So whilst they are seeking to move away from photo sharing, that doesn’t mean it will disappear completely. And if you aren’t used to using video content, this is a great time to start experimenting with it and how it can be incorporated into your strategy.

The important thing to remember is that this update isn’t just about video either. Although this is going to be a big change, there are other elements that are coming to the app that could bring a more unique experience altogether. For example, the new shopping features could be a great way to bring direct sales for your business, and are highly worth considering.

We all know and love Instagram for it’s simplicity in sharing good quality photos and building awareness for your business. But this update doesn’t have to be the end of that – who knows what it may bring?

The exciting part is adapting to these new changes and potential challenges, and seeing how your content will adapt with it!
